If you’ve been reading our blog for a while, you know that being listed on Google is a no-brainer and a key step to increase your business visibility. Making sure your listing is fully optimised can help your business stand out from the competition and attract new customers. Here are some things to look at if you want to make the most of your Google My Business (GMB) listing.
Check your address fits the standards
Having updated business and contact details is crucial – make sure to at least have consistent and current information on both your website and Google listing. Be sure to also check that your address follows the standardised format for addresses – a simple typo or mistake could affect your listing and it’s easily avoidable!

Correctly place your business on the map
Google uses the business address to generate a geocode which will determine where your business appears on Google Maps. In some cases, the pin on the map is not placed exactly where the business is located, so be sure to check on the map if your business is correctly displayed so customers can easily find you.
Make sure customers can find you by correctly placing the pin on the map!
Choose a specific business category
Google is always looking at better ways to present relevant content for users’ queries. The more specific you can be with your business category, the more likely you will appear for searches that match it. If possible, avoid broad categories and try to be as precise as possible.
We chose “web designer” as a business category for Ubisan as it’s at the core of what we do.
Don’t misrepresent your location
Listing your business as part of a larger city near you can be tempting, but misrepresenting your business location is more likely to harm your rankings as Google won’t be fooled! Proximity to users and location are factors that can help your business rank well for your area and increase your local visibility.
We are in Glasgow so can be listed as such – don’t list Glasgow if you are next to the city!
Encourage and answer reviews
Business owners can be wary of online reviews, but they can help your business stand out and rank well. Encourage customers to review your business on Google and answer all reviews. If you get any negative review, you can show potential customers you care about customer satisfaction by dealing with any complaints.

Showcase your business with pictures
A picture is worth a thousand words, yet many businesses neglect this opportunity. Adding pictures can showcase your brand, business or work and help increase traffic to your website. Customers like to do their research before visiting a business or purchasing a product, so pictures can help you stand out from your competitors.

Create engaging content
We’ve shared before how unique and engaging content is key to attract new customers and is also highly valued by Google. Google Posts, a recently added feature, allows you to directly publish events, promotions and posts to your Google profile so it appears directly in Search and Maps. Another chance for your business to stand out among competitors and gain visibility.
Optimising your Google My Business listing is not time-consuming. A good listing paired with your business website is the foundation of a strong online presence and will increase your local visibility. When it comes to gaining a competitive edge, every little detail counts so don’t ignore anything even if you think that it won’t have much impact.
